2008-2009
Annual Report to the Membership
The year 2009 marks the 70th anniversary of the American Academy
of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R). And while that long history demonstrates
the stability of the organization, your Academy cannot rest on that. It has to adapt
through the years in order to stay relevant as the premiere membership organization
for PM&R physicians.
By continuously monitoring the landscape and analyzing the demands
on today’s physiatrist, your Academy has responded with changes of its own. The highlights
of the last 12 months demonstrate how AAPM&R strives to be more than just THE Academy,
but to be seen as YOUR Academy – a professional organization that not only meets the
changing needs of today’s PM&R physician, but anticipates those on the horizon. We’re
not working to just keep up, we’re striving to provide leadership to help you, and the
specialty, be successful in the years ahead.
Over the last year your Academy Board of Governors and staff of
the national office have reviewed the lessons of the past, listened to the member feedback
of today, and kept an eye to the future to establish a long-term strategic plan. There
are many questions and challenges facing today’s AAPM&R members, but your Academy provides
strength in member knowledge, strength in member community, and strength in member numbers.
