Networking, Receptions & Member Events
Several events at the Annual Assembly unite attendees throughout the meeting and build networking opportunities within the Academy community. Receptions offer social gatherings on different nights that encourage attendees to meet each other; events offer a chance to connect with the Academy and Assembly opportunities.
Welcome Reception

The Welcome Reception is the perfect place to start the Annual Assembly, by greeting old friends and meeting with our industry partners. Held in the Exhibit Hall, the reception provides an ideal opportunity to socialize and preview this year’s array of products and services. Guests and children must be registered for admittance to this event.
Residents' Reception
Friday, November 5: 6 pm–7 pm
Sheraton Seattle
This annual event gives residents the opportunity to network with each other during a casual cocktail reception. The reception also offers a great way to meet medical student attendees. The Annual Assembly resident and medical student registration fees include admittance to the Residents’ Reception.

Attend this closing event to review your favorite moments of the week. Enjoy an entertaining evening with your friends, colleagues, and new acquaintances while enjoying hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and entertainment. Guests and children must be registered for admittance to this event.

First Time Attendee/New Member Meeting

This meeting is geared toward new members and first-time attendees. Learn about new initiatives taking place at the Academy and see what’s new at the Annual Assembly, from hands-on workshops and resident programming to the abundant networking opportunities. 600. Presidential Address and Plenary Session

This session will kick off the Annual Assembly with the official Opening Ceremony, featuring a speech delivered by AAPM&R President M. Elizabeth Sandel, MD. Dr. Sandel will share insights from her oral history project, Playback/PM&R: Our Voices, Our Vision. Dr. Sandel’s address will incorporate interviews she’s conducted with members from across the country and abroad who practice in different settings and engaged in diverse practice activities. The discussion will examine the core values and diversity of the specialty represented by the oral histories of these physiatrists. Come and hear what the narrators tell us about who we are.
601. Youth Sports Concussion: Education to Legislation

There is growing interest in the recognition of sports concussions across the United States. Dr Stanley Herring, an expert on sports concussion, will discuss our current understanding of these injuries in the youth athlete. The lecture will include topics focusing on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, side-line assessment, evaluation tools, role of neuropsychological testing, and management recommendations for return to play and impact of Washington State’s new Lystedt Law.
602. The Measurement of Human Function: New Tools and New Applications

This lecture will present the major limitations of traditional methods and discuss the pros and cons of contemporary functional outcome assessment techniques; and improving the Social Security Disability process. Examples of the use of outcome data in rehabilitation practice and research will be presented.
603. Forty-Second Walter J. Zeiter Lecture and Awards Ceremony

Award winners in physiatry are honored in the first half of this plenary session: The Academy applauds its Public Service and Distinguished Clinician Award recipients; the Foundation for PM&R announces the winners of the ERF New Investigator Awards and Scott F. Nadler PASSOR Musculoskeletal Research Grant; and the American Board of PM&R recognizes its Elkins Award recipient. The second half of the session is set aside for the Walter J. Zeiter Lecture. Walter J. Zeiter served as executive director of AAPM&R for 20 years. The lectureship is named in his honor is awarded annually to a physiatrist who shares Dr. Zeiter’s qualities of statesmanship, scholarship, executive leadership, and warm friendship. The Academy’s award recipients, including the 2010 Zeiter lecturer, will be announced once the award cycle is complete.
