Osteoporosis
Americans incur some 1.5 million
fractures each year that can be attributed to osteoporosis. The first
step to alleviating the situation is diagnosis, and physiatrists are
concerned about the number of undiagnosed cases. The public’s lack
of recognition contributes substantially to the problem.
Physiatrists are involved in both prevention of osteoporosis and treatment following a fracture due to the condition. Preventive measures to avoid an incident or recurrence include weight bearing exercises and developing a patient’s balance. Physiatrists create treatment plans and prescribe medication for patients with osteoporosis.
