Eligibility for Sports Medicine Board Examination
ABPMR has set the following requirements for physicians to
sit for the subspecialty exam in sports medicine:
-
ABPMR Certification: Must be a current ABPMR diplomate in good standing.
-
Licensure: Must have a current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice
medicine or osteopathy in a United States or Puerto Rico licensing jurisdiction,
or licensure in Canada. Evidence of unrestricted licensure in all states where a
license is held will be required prior to issuance of the certificate.
-
Training/Practice: Beginning with the 2012 examination, all applicants will be
required to have completed 12 months in an ACGME-accredited sports medicine
training program. Until then, there is a grand-fathering period that allows
physiatrists practicing sports medicine to sit for the subspecialty board exam.
ABPMR diplomates have a temporary five-year window, beginning in 2007 and ending
in 2011, in which there will be a practice track available based upon the
following two criteria:
-
Complete a minimum of five years of sports medicine practice, full or part-time,
during which more than 20% of the individual’s time over the five year period
was spent devoted to sports medicine.
-
Complete 30 CME credits relevant to sports medicine that have been obtained at
Sports Medicine courses, national meetings, or closely related offerings
(completed within the five-year practice period).
