Descriptions of AAPM&R Awards
The Frank H. Krusen, MD, Lifetime Achievement Award
The Frank H. Krusen, MD, Lifetime Achievement Award was established by the American Academy of Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation in 1972 to honor a founding father of the Academy
who was a leader in the development of the specialty of PM&R. Dr. Krusen, the
Academy’s fourth president, was the first recipient of the award that now
bears his name. The Krusen Award is the Academy’s highest honor, and
recipients of the gold medallion are selected on the basis of their
outstanding and unique contributions to the specialty.
The nominee should

Have made outstanding and unique contributions
to the field of PM&R in the areas of patient care, research, education, and
administration; and have served the profession
through involvement in Academy activities.

The Walter J. Zeiter Lecture
The Walter J. Zeiter Lectureship was established by AAPM&R in 1961 to honor
physiatrists who have made consistent contributions to the specialty and who
have earned the respect and admiration of their peers for outstanding
accomplishments in the field of PM&R.
The lectureship is named in honor of Walter J. Zeiter, MD, who served as
executive director of AAPM&R and the American Congress of Rehabilitation
Medicine from 1939–1959. Each year this lectureship is awarded to a
physiatrist who shared Dr. Zeiter’s qualities of statesmanship, scholarship,
executive leadership, and warm friendship. The first lecture was presented by
Frank H. Krusen, MD, in 1968. The Zeiter lecture is presented during the AAPM&R
Annual Assembly.

Recognition Award for Distinguished Clinicians
The Distinguished Clinician Award is presented by AAPM&R to honor individual
physiatrists who have achieved distinction on the basis of their scholarly
level of teaching and their outstanding performance in patient care
activities.

Distinguished Member Award
Established in 1994, the Distinguished Member Award honors AAPM&R members who
have provided invaluable service to the specialty of PM&R primarily through
participation in PM&R-related organizations other than the Academy.

Recognition Award for Distinguished Public Service
Established by the Academy in 1981, the Distinguished Public Service Award
honors individuals who, in the course of their public service activities, have
made significant contributions to the development of educational, research,
and service activities that directly impact the specialty of physical medicine
and rehabilitation and that benefit the nation’s citizens with disabilities.
As many as three awards may be given each year.

specialty of PM&R, and that benefit the nation’s citizens with disabilities.

PASSOR Legacy Award and Lectureship
Established in 2008 to preserve the legacy and namesake of the Physiatric
Association of Spine, Sports and Occupational Rehabilitation (PASSOR), this award is meant to recognize
an individual in mid career that has advanced musculoskeletal physiatry through clinical care, education,
service or scholarship (research). The award recipient will present a lecture at the AAPM&R
Annual Assembly.
The nominee should

Be an AAPM&R Member
Have distinguished himself/herself in the field of
musculoskeletal physiatry
Be in mid career or later
Attain excellence in 3 of the 4 areas: clinical care,
national education, national service, or scholarship
