April 30 Deadline to Submit Proposals to Resident and Fellow Section

"The deadline for submitting resolutions is April 30 to be considered for this year’s AMA-RFS annual meeting which will be held June 11-13."

More than likely you are already a member of the largest organization of resident and fellow physicians in the United States. Comprising over 20,000 members, the Resident and Fellow Section (RFS) of the American Medical Association (AMA) fights to improve working conditions; reform America’s health care system; improve medical education; and create tools to help resident and fellow physicians succeed both personally and professionally. RFS is composed of over 150 resident and fellow representatives from medical societies and professional organizations, including AAPM&R.

How can RFS help me?

National health care reform is under way; it is likely such reform will significantly impact the field of physiatry. More pertinent to residents and fellows are proposals on issues such as duty hours and student loan repayment. Specifically, RFS creates a national forum for you, the resident, to bring about change. Since its creation in the 1970s, RFS has passed resolutions transforming graduate medical education and health care in general. For example, the RFS has been involved in extending the 20/220 pathway (economic hardship deferment) for student loan repayment; learn more about this resolution online (PDF Download). Download the AMA Web site's digest of other resolutions (PDF Download).

I have an idea—how does the process work?

The process is straightforward: Name the problem, come up with the solution (or decide it needs more study), write a resolution, and submit it to RFS.

The deadline for submitting resolutions is April 30, 2009, to be considered for this year’s AMA-RFS annual meeting, June 11-13. After review and acceptance by RFS, the resolution is presented to the AMA House of Delegates who can use its finances and influence to make your idea a reality.
