The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) creates education and training curricula to define the knowledge, skills and attitudes that physiatrists should aspire to achieve when practicing in specific clinical areas. This includes competencies that should be achieved during residency training as well as more advanced competencies for clinical practice. These curricula are intentionally broad in scope to define the spectrum of training needs, and are intended to be used and tailored by those designing education and training programs and/or individuals who want to benchmark their own competencies and identify education needs.
AAPM&R develops these curricula in part to set an aspirational standard for training. They are meant to augment rather than supplant training developed by program and fellowship directors, and are not intended for any regulatory use.
