The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) recently released guidance on the training requirements for the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. Section 1263 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, known as the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, requires new or renewing DEA registrants, as of June 27, 2023, to have completed a total of at least 8 hours of training on opioid or other substance use disorders. The requirements are outlined here. To help you, the Academy has put together a listing of educational activities that meet these requirements.

In partnership with other organizations, AAPM&R members were involved with developing the Opioid REMS Education Initiative: Opioid and Pain Management Continuing Education.

  • AMA Ed Hub
    • This is repository for educational content from AMA and other organizations. There are currently 5 free AMA modules that range from 0.5 to 2.5 CME credits each. There are 27 other modules from other organizations that range from 1 to 8 CME credits and have a fee associated with them.
  • American Society of Addiction Medicine
    • This is a repository of 6 modules that range from 1 to 8 CME credits each. There are fees associated with these modules.
  • NEJM Knowledge+
    • This course is broken into 8 topic areas, worth up to 10 CME credits. There is no fee associated with this course.
  • PCSS | Providers Clinical Support System
    • This is a repository of 12 modules, with each module being 1 CME credit each. There are no fees associated with these modules.
