On December 6, your Academy joined several other societies in submitting a letter to UnitedHealthcare (UHC) regarding their policy on Electrical stimulation for the Treatment of Pain and Muscle Rehabilitation. In this policy, UHC has deemed two treatments, dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRG-S) and percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS), as not medical necessary and therefore not reimbursable services. This joint letter supports consideration of DRG-S and PNS as targeted forms of neurostimulation with growing bodies of supporting evidence. We have urged UHC to consider allowing patients access to these non-opioid therapies as potential treatment options for various types of pain. AAPM&R continues to monitor concerns with medical policies related to pain management via our work with the Multisociety Pain Workgroup.
