AAPM&R Joins Multi Society Pain Workgroup to Urge MACs to Require Ultrasound Guidance in Trigger Point Injections

Oct 14, 2024

Your Academy joined the International Pain and Spine Intervention Society and other medical specialty societies to submit comments on the final Local Coverage Determination (LCD) for trigger point injections (TPIs) which does not cover ultrasound guidance for TPIs. The coalition letter emphasizes the importance of ultrasound guidance to ensure safe and accurate injections, particularly in high-risk areas like the neck, gluteal muscles, and thoracic region. The letter references a July 2024 multi-society guideline that supports ultrasound use, stating it can enhance targeting and reduce adverse events. The coalition letter urges Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) to reconsider the LCD to include coverage for ultrasound guidance in specific anatomical regions where the risk of injury is significant.
