We’re launching a new series of resources for residents and early-career physiatrists to help guide you through the initial challenges of entering practice. The first online video module, Identifying the Right Practice Setting to Meet Your Goals, includes a series of interviews with practicing physiatrists and provides useful information on:

• Various practice settings available for physiatrists
• A physiatrist’s role within each different practice setting
• Benefits and pitfalls of different practice settings
• How a practice setting can help physiatrists diversify their careers
• Advice and recommendations about what to consider before deciding on a practice setting
  
  

I Have A Doll Just Like You is a children’s story about amputation and limb deficiency. It was written by AAPM&R member Julie Larson, MD, FAAPMR, with the goal of teaching children that people come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and abilities. This book is a fictional, illustrated story for children about a little boy with a congenital amputation of his left arm. It also includes a glossary of amputee terminology, a letter to parents and teachers, and a series of discussion starters for families and classrooms. All of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to send children with limb differences to amputee camp. Be sure to check it out!

A new grant opportunity from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) at ACL has been announced under the Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems (SCIMS) Multi-Site Collaborative Research Project. The purpose of this grant is to support multi-site research topics related to rehabilitation following spinal cord injury. Read more and apply by May 9.

• David Hryvniak, DO, assistant professor of PM&R at the University of Virginia, discusses sports medicine and how he helps keep athletes healthy. Dr. Hryvniak also manages the Runner’s Clinic, along with 2 other physicians, where he helps patients regain the fitness necessary to return to running or other physical activities. Read more.

• Megan Parkes, MD, was recently appointed to medical director at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago at Silver Cross Hospital, where she will oversee all inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services. Congratulations, Dr. Parkes! Read more.
