This summer, your Academy announced a BOLD new vision for physiatry defined by YOU! Learn more about the Path to the Vision here.

We’re looking at new and innovative ways in which physiatry is practiced. Key areas were identified through the Visioning PM&R Bold research, and efforts will be made to learn more about these areas and how they may apply across the specialty. Over the past 2 weeks, we gathered leaders in pain medicine, pediatric rehabilitation, and cancer rehabilitation medicine to start discussing opportunities in their practice areas that align with the new vision. We’re looking forward to continuing these BOLD conversations this winter.

On September 11, your Academy submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule. The proposed rule reflects CMS’ recommendations regarding payment and policy for physician services effective January 1, 2018. AAPM&R commented on several proposals that may impact members, including some changes to payment. Learn more.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will be conducting field testing for 8 episode-based cost measures before consideration of their potential use in the cost performance category of the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) of the Quality Payment Program (QPP). Learn more.

On October 17, join a clinical discussion as highly-regarded physiatrist Dr. Cristin McKenna, of Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, presents case-based scenarios of neurotoxin injection therapy for the treatment of adult upper limb spasticity and cervical dystonia. Learn more.

• Flora Hammond, MD, FAAPMR, professor and chair of the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Indiana University School of Medicine, as well as chief of medical affairs at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana, is among the team of Indiana University researchers who received a $2.1 million federal grant to study the long-term impact of traumatic brain injuries. McDonald, MD, FAAPMR, professor of pediatrics, chair of the PM&R department, director of rehabilitation services and director of the neuromuscular disease clinics at UC Davis Health, has been appointed as the national principal investigator for the HOPE-2 Trial, run by Capricor Therapeutics, Inc.
