State Legislation Update: Scope of Practice for Physical Therapists

Title: Changes Provisions Relating to the Scope of Practice for Physical Therapists

Summary: This bill would change the scope of practice for physical therapists. It would allow physical therapists to evaluate and initiate treatment on a patient without a prescription or referral from an approved health care provider. It would also allow a physical therapist to provide educational resources and training, develop fitness or wellness programs, or provide screening or consultative services within the scope of physical therapy practice without a prescription referral from an approved health care provider. The bill does require that a physical therapist shall refer to an approved health care provider any patient whose medical condition at the time of evaluation or treatment is determined to be beyond the scope of practice of physical therapy. Proposed Effective Date: August 28, 2018.
