Frequently Asked Questions

• I’m not an AAPM&R member. Can I participate?
  Participation is a member benefit, learn more about becoming a member.
• How long does it take to make a profile?
  A profile can be completed in about 10 minutes.
• Once I sign up, how long will it take to get matched?
  Matching is done on a rolling basis. Most individuals will be matched within 2 weeks, but if you are seeking a more specific type of mentor/protégé, it could take longer to find the perfect fit.
• What will my match be based on?
  Matching can be based on different categories, such as type of practice, specialized skills, subspecialty, etc. 
• Can I be re-matched if my mentor/protégé isn't a good fit?
  We would be happy to re-match you if there isn’t a good fit. Please contact mentoring@aapmr.org.

Tips

At the start of your mentoring relationship, establish guidelines such as:

• Frequency and mode of communication 
• Responsibility for rescheduling missed meetings/calls 
• Agenda format 
• Evaluating progress; measuring success 
• “Off-limits” conversations

For a successful experience, avoid:

• Unrealistic expectations
• Nebulous goals
• Lack of participation
• Breaking confidence
• Acting with a hidden agenda
• Projecting a negative perspective
• Poor rapport/no rapport
