Symposium on Long COVID—Examining the Working Definition

Jun 21, 2023, 13:00 PM by Megan Brunner
On June 22-23, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine will be hosting an in-person and virtual workshop focused on examining the working definition for Long COVID. This past April, we announced that Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez, MD, FAAPMR, was appointed to the National Academies committee that is examining the current working definition for Long COVID. AAPM&R proudly nominated Dr. Verduzco-Gutierrez to this committee and she will be moderating one of the sessions during this workshop, “Impacts of Long COVID on Health and Socio-Economic Well-Being and Implications for Defining Long COVID.” Learn more and register.

Additionally, on June 29-30, the National Academies will be hosting a separate in-person and virtual workshop focused on infection-associated chronic illnesses. Several chronic illnesses, from persistent Lyme disease to Long COVID, have been associated with prior infectious disease; however, the mechanisms of the development and link between infection and long-lasting symptoms remain poorly understood. This leads to limited treatment options for the often-debilitating symptoms of infection-associated chronic illnesses. This workshop will explore common biological and clinical factors related to infection-associated chronic illnesses, potential strategies to treat or prevent disease progression and more. Learn more and register.
