ABIM Launches Choosing Wisely App

Aug 04, 2017

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) has released a smartphone app for the Choosing Wisely campaign.

The new app makes 500 specialty society recommendations available at the touch of an iPhone screen. The app will be rolled out to iPad within a month and Android devices shortly thereafter.

Through the new app, clinicians will be able to search the recommendations using keywords and filter by specialty, age, setting and service (i.e., imaging, medication, treatment, lab, test). Recommendations are linked to relevant patient-friendly resources, and both can be shared via text or email with colleagues or patients.

Choosing Wisely aims to promote conversations between clinicians and patients by helping patients choose care that is supported by evidence, not duplicative of other tests or procedures already received, free from harm, and truly necessary.

In response to this challenge, the Academy and other national organizations representing medical specialists asked their providers to “choose wisely” by identifying tests or procedures commonly used in their field whose necessity should be questioned and discussed. The resulting lists of “Things Providers and Patients Should Question” are intended to spark discussion about the need—or lack thereof—for many frequently ordered tests or treatments.
