Spinal Cord Injury Awareness MonthEvery 48 seconds in our country, a person becomes paralyzed. A majority of injuries occur from motor vehicle accidents, falls, work-related accidents, and sports injuries. 3

Sponsored by Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Bill Nelson (D-FL), Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month aims to emphasize the state of health care and treatment for people with spinal cord injuries, highlight the advances that have yet to be made, and honor those living with a spinal cord injury. 4

Spinal Cord Injury Fast Facts:

  • There are approximately 12,500 new spinal cord injuries (SCI) each year. 2
  • The number of people in the United States in 2014 who have SCI has been estimated to be approximately 276,000 persons. 2
  • The average age at injury has increased from 29 years during the 1970s to 42 years since 2010. 2
  • Approximately 79% of spinal cord injuries occur among males. 2
