State Advocacy Update: Colorado OTs Seek Direct Access to Prescribe DME

Feb 13, 2025

Since January, your Academy's State Advocacy Committee has been tracking a concerning bill out of Colorado that would grant occupational therapists (OTs) the authority to prescribe durable medical equipment (DME) without the involvement of a physician. HB-1016 passed the Colorado House in less than two weeks and is currently being considered by the Colorado Senate.

Your Academy’s State Advocacy Committee (SAC2) quickly mobilized, sending letters to both the Colorado House and Colorado Senate Health & Human Service Committees urging policymakers to consider the impact these inappropriate changes could have on quality patient care and long-term healthcare costs. Additionally, a call to action was sent to members in Colorado asking them to contact their state senator to oppose legislation before it passes. SAC2 will continue to monitor the progress of this legislation and provide updates as things progress.
