The Physician Clinical Registry Coalition (PCRC) has submitted comments to the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) regarding its proposed changes to the HIPAA Security Rule. The PCRC, consisting of medical society-sponsored clinical data registries, supports the need for robust cybersecurity to protect electronic protected health information (ePHI) and agrees with the OCR’s focus on cybersecurity amid rising cyber threats. However, the PCRC expresses concerns about the underestimation of time and costs associated with the proposed rule and urges the OCR to reconsider and collaborate with stakeholders to find more practical solutions to address cybersecurity risks. The Academy supports the PCRC in raising concerns about this operational burden and cost associated with implementation of the rule.
