AAPM&R Members in the News: May 2016

  • Michael Boninger, MD, director of the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute and professor and chair of the department of PM&R at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, has been named UPMC's vice president for medical affairs for community provider services. Congratulations, Dr. Boninger! Additionally, Gwendolyn Sowa, MD, PhD, will succeed Dr. Boninger as chair of the PM&R department and UPMC Rehabilitation Institute director.   • Deborah Braverman, MD; Alberto Esquenazi, MD; Nathaniel Mayer, MD; C.R. Sridhara, MD; and Thomas Watanabe, MD of Moss Rehab/Einstein Healthcare Network have been named "Top Docs" in PM&R by Philadelphia Magazine. Dr. Braverman runs the enhanced external counterpulsation therapy and cardiac rehab program; Dr. Esquenazi is the chairman and vice president of medical affairs and is an AAPM&R past president; Dr. Mayer runs the motor control analysis laboratory and is the past director of the brain injury program; Dr. Sridhara is the director of the electrodiagnostic center; and Dr. Watanabe is the director of brain injury and stroke programs. A big congratulations to this group! Read more.

  • Barbara Browne, MD, medical director of Magee Rehabilitation Hospital's Stroke and Geriatrics Program, has been named a "Top Doc" in PM&R by Philadelphia Magazine. This is her sixth year as one of Philadelphia Magazine’s Top Doctors. Congratulations, Dr. Browne! Read more.

  • Michele Fantasia, MD, physiatrist at Children's Specialized Hospital, discusses the recovery of now 6-year-old Jude Siperstein, who was diagnosed with transverse myelitis when he was 4. Read more.

  • Brian D. Greenwald, MD, medical director at the Center for Head Injuries at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, discusses traumatic brain injury and the progress of one of his patients. Read more.

  • Andrew Judelson, MD, director of the sports concussion clinic at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod, discusses concussions and the recovery of Nick Delande, a high school senior who suffered a concussion during a soccer game in 2015. Read more.
     
  • Karen Morice, MD, assistant professor of PM&R at Montefiore Health System/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Se Won Lee, MD, assistant professor of rehabilitation medicine and director of the electrodiagnostic laboratory at Montefiore Health System/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, co-authored the article, "Recovering from Chronic Knee, Hip and Back Pain – Without Surgery" on U.S. News & World Report.   • Brian Murphy, DO, physiatrist at Crozer-Keystone Health System, is leading a new outpatient PM&R center in western Delaware county where he will oversee patient care provided at the Crozer-Keystone Regional Rehabilitation Centers, which offer intensive treatment programs for patients recovering from neurological conditions, orthopedic and spinal cord injuries, trauma, stroke, and more.   • Billy Ray Smith, MD, owner of Eastern Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, received the 2015 Pitt County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Leader Award. This is the first time in the award's 30-year history that a medical doctor has been recognized. Congratulations, Dr. Smith! Read more.

  • Curtis Whitehair, MD, program director for the PM&R residency program at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital/MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, is one of just 10 recipients of the 2016 Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). He was chosen for this prestigious honor from more than 9,800 residency program directors representing all specialties. Congratulations, Dr. Whitehair! Read more.

  • Claire V. Wolfe, MD, physiatrist at Orthopedic ONE and AAPM&R past president, has been reelected to the American Medical Association (AMA) Senior Physicians Section for a 2-year term, effective July 1, 2016. Congratulations, Dr. Wolfe!
