On August 22, general and medical rehabilitation physicians gathered during a Virtual Town Hall hosted by the General and Medical Rehabilitation Member Council Leader, Eric Wisotzky, MD.
One key theme emerged early as we discussed trends, opportunities, and barriers for PM&R in the changing health care landscape:
- PM&R physicians have an opportunity to play a role during every phase of the Post-Acute Care continuum. Physiatrists can demonstrate the knowledge and value they can add in all post-acute settings to help patients achieve outcomes in a cost-effective manner.
When polled, 100% of attendees agreed that there is an opportunity for PM&R to lead in Post-Acute Care.
Participants discussed additional opportunities for PM&R including:
- Partnering with emergency care for trauma and post-ICU rehab care
- Partnering with oncology for cancer rehabilitation
- Strengthening roles in:
- amputee care
- stroke care
- cardiac care
- wound care
When discussing barriers, participants discussed the additional training residents would need to be effective in these settings, including more exposure to multi-specialty team settings and more health policy training. Participants also explored the number of physiatrists for these opportunities.
