Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) has been at the forefront of health care for the past 100 years. Physiatrists have responded to global events by offering new medical services, including the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers with amputations and the community re-integration of patients with catastrophic injuries, such as spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries. The specialty’s mission is to assist patients in their recovery process from injuries by restoring function, promoting a collaborative effort across health-related disciplines, and ensuring that patients return to their daily activities or athletic performance at their optimal potential. We connected with Ricardo E. Colberg, MD, RMSK, FAAPMR, to hear his ideas for optimizing the current patient care model and how physiatrists can Be PM&R Bold in this new health care frontier.
