In March, AAPM&R joined a Multi-Society Pain Workgroup (MPW) letter to United Healthcare urging reversal of their current policy of noncoverage for basivertebral nerve ablation. United Healthcare’s policy indicates that there is insufficient evidence to establish basivertebral nerve ablation as a treatment for low back pain, and therefore, does not cover the procedure. The MPW advocates for the reversal of this position, citing evidence supporting the use of this procedure and its potential for reducing low back pain-related healthcare utilization.
