CMS Announces Comparative Billing Reports on Drugs of Abuse Testing

Sep 28, 2021

Providers who regularly bill Medicare for drugs of abuse testing can expect to receive a Comparative Billing Report (CBR) in September.  CBRs provide data analysis comparing an individual provider’s claim submissions to the national average.  A sample of the CBR letter can be viewed on the CBR website.  CBRs are considered by Medicare to be educational tools and are not an indication of wrongdoing.  However, a CBR which suggests a provider bills well outside the national average may support internal compliance review efforts.  If you receive a CBR on drugs of abuse testing or are interested in better understanding the CBR process, register here for an educational session hosted by the CBR contractor on Wednesday October 6 from 3-4pm EDT to review the drugs of abuse testing CBR.
